Commonly Asked Questions
Where did the name of The Salvation Army come from?
In 1865 The Salvation Army started out as the Christian Revival Society, and was soon after called the East London Christian Mission. The organization grew rapidly and in 1867 became known simply as the Christian Mission. In 1878 William Booth, the founder, was proof reading a pamphlet, which referred to the Christian Mission as a "volunteer army." Booth changed the word "volunteer" to read "Salvation Army" and the name was adopted.
Why the uniforms?
It is a witness of their faith in God. No one wears the uniform unless they are a soldier (member) of The Salvation Army. By putting on the uniform, they are publicly sharing their love for God, their relationship with Him, and their desire to serve Him by serving others.
